Got outside today, and went for a ride from Holland to Saugatuck and back (with a few detours). Jody, my dad, Randy, Gary, Jeff and Rick went to. It was really, really nice to actually generate forward momentum from a pedal stroke. I tuned the crank, and the bike went forward...... Sweet. We did almost 3 1/2 hours total, with a bunch of hard, 1 minute efforts in a big gear, well that's what I did anyway. Jody had the fixie and did the entire ride in a big gear.
We all took off together, chatting it up as we rode along the lake shore. It was cool to be out with friends, the shine of the sun on a pleasant Spring like day, and to know the Winter was nearly behind us. We praised ourselves for surviving it. There were lots of other cyclists sharing the same route as us. The 46 degree temps weren't warm, but they were entirely ride-able...... and enjoyable.
Moving forward, that's what I've been struggling to do for more than a year now. It's a task easily identified, and not easily carried out. But, like today, having the right environment helps. But mostly it's just way easier to move ahead when you have someone that shares in the task of shouldering life's burdens.
On this day it is indeed good to feel my body AND my life moving forward.
