Yes, I got fixed recently. It didn't hurt at all, in fact it felt awesome! No, I'm not talking about a surgical procedure, but rather my first fixed gear bicycle! I put it together yesterday, and Jody brought her fixie out to Holland and we went for a ride. The first thing I did was forget that there is no coasting and almost catapulted myself over the bars! But in no time really I felt very comfortable. I have ridden singlespeed road bikes quite often over the years, but this was even better. Even more simplified. Get on the bike and pedal, period!
Our route was very apropos. We headed toward the farm country of Ottawa county, through the area of where I spent my early childhood years. Riding past my elementary school, North Holland Elementary. Pointing out the spot where I first kissed a girl. Then we rode on to the road I lived on, 112th ave. The red brick house and old barn had been torn down and replaced with a modern home and a pole barn, this saddened me.
We finished up our loop and I went back to work at the bike shop for the rest of the night. The time flew by as my thoughts were filled with the great bike, the great ride and the great company that was my afternoon.
